Mother’s Day Cake

As I wind down on my 23rd Mother’s Day, I reflect on all the past mothers who made me who I am today. I think that it is like baking a cake and we are the product of all the ingredients that have gone into making us who we are today. Not just my immediate family, but also all of my ancestors who helped to move me along a path well before I got here.

Although I have lots of reasons to be very proud of my daughters, the one reason I am the most proud of is their good hearts. They sincerely care about people and want to make the world a better place. They take the time to be considerate and listen to people. They are kind. They have always been kind. I think it is in their DNA.

I like to believe that I am one of the ingredients for this, but I know in my heart it is the product of many generations. To confess, I am primarily thinking of the mothers. I have suitcases of old photos I have inherited and you can see the tenderness in these photos. They go back 5 or 6 generations and have written stories that have been handed down as well. These good hearts have taken generations to bake. I feel we have not lost those who have died but only folded them into the batter.
