Have you heard of Marie Kondo’s book,The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing,or her Netflix series, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo?
About a month ago, my husband and I embarked on a house cleaning journey. I had the decluttering checklist for the Marie Kondo method below laying around for a while and dreaded how much work it would be to actually do that list. One day, after looking at the list yet again, I decided I was ready to do it. I thought about how I have lived in my house for 30 years, and if I am lucky, I may get 30 more.
So, the thought of 30 years of stuff on top of another 30 years made me panic into action. Even my husband was impressed. I started with clothing, and with every piece, you ask yourself if this sparks joy? If the answer is no, it goes. I am 90% through at this point. I started with the easiest things and as you get going it became easier, and then I really picked up steam. Our garage is about half full right now.
Starting right now, you can be who you want to be. It just takes some decluttering of your life.
Begin by making your decisions through the lens of who you want to be.Don’t punish yourself for the habits that have not served you. Thank them and let them go.Life is supposed to be joyful. Discard anything that isn’t. Let that sink in – it really need not be limited to items. It can be people, jobs, lifestyles, habits and more. Just start asking the question.
What sparks joy in my life? Keep it. What doesn’t? Lose it.
