We live in a stressful world, and more needs to be done to teach stress management techniques for coping with it. In my role for a local hospital, I listen closely to the needs of the community. I hear stress from every sector of society and every age group, from the students, teachers, families to retirees (isolation and loneliness). Sadly, I don’t think our community is unique either. Did you know that on average there are 121 suicides in the U.S. per day? For these reasons, I am assembling our hospital experts to create a Stress Management Technique Expo, and am asking for your help.
According to WebMD, “Stress affects us all. You may notice symptoms of stress when disciplining your kids, during busy times at work, when managing your finances, or when coping with a challenging relationship. Stress is everywhere. And while a little stress is OK — some stress is actually beneficial — too much stress can wear you down and make you sick, both mentally and physically.”
How can an expo help? We are planning to partner with our Integrative Medicine Department and Employee Wellness group to offer coping strategies and techniques including: mindfulness, art, creativity (such as healthy cooking), music, pet therapy, massage, yoga, time-management, nature, gratitude, spirituality, volunteering, journaling, talk therapy, meditation, breathing techniques, exercise you enjoy, and fun (board games, hobbies, clubs).
What coping skills do you use to manage your stress? If you could share some ideas, I will hope to share the techniques at our Expo so others may benefit. Thanks for your help!
