Did you know the single most important thing you can do to live longer and happier is to socialize more?
So, what is a Moai, and why do we need one? According to Wikipedia, “Moais (pronounced “mo-eye”) are social support groups that form in order to provide encouragement for social, financial, health, or spiritual interests.[1]Moai means “meeting for a common purpose” in Japanese, and originated from the social support groups in Okinawa, Japan. According to research, Moais are considered one of the leading factors of the longevity of lifespan.” Research suggests this is why women live longer than men, since they have more social support.
Ideally, look for upbeat people to join your group. Each additional positive friend will increase your positive outlook through subconscious signals called mirror neurons; queues we pick up from our peers. Healthy behaviors are contagious, so surround yourself with positive people who share a common purpose you are interested in. You will be setting the stage for better health if you cultivate your social circle in the direction you want to go.
What is an interest you have that would make for a common purpose moai? Here are some ideas for a common purpose; a get healthier moai, a walking moai, a potluck moai, a restaurant moai, a pickleball moai, a coffee shop moai, a bookclub moai. You get the idea.
